Methodology: working together

Stage1: Discovery

We begin the journey by Peter discovering all about you and your business:

  • Being briefed on your personal objectives and those for the business
  • Being briefed on the problems, that we must resolve: no matter the symptoms the problems usually come down to the 5 basic areas of:
    1. Time management
    2. Knowledge and training
    3. Planning
    4. Monitoring and control
    5. Business direction

These are discussed in detail in a later directory
  • Leading to a session where we do a SWOT analysis
  • All sessions throughout the consultancy to be documented, recording the important issues covered, the advice given, and importantly listing the action items

Stage2: Getting the Board to operate
(concurrent with Stage1)

  • It is important to immediately institute regular, fixed date and time (it may well be after hours) Board Meetings; timed at a date in the month when the previous month P&Ls can be available. This is an important stage in introducing order to the business.
  • The regular members will be you as directors and Peter as the consultant.
  • We should use this as a formal way of receiving reports, regular discussion, review, planning and decision making.
  • We will also use it for task setting and reporting back to the Board

Stage3: Making recommendations to the Board

  • As I learn about the business, how it operates and the problems, so I will begin to see the changes that are necessary and develop recommendations.
  • These will be presented at the monthly board meetings for discussion and decision so the staff will know when they are implemented that the changes have the backing of the board.

Stage4: Building to a Strategic Plan

  • Here we formalise our work together in a three page Plan which must state clearly our value proposition and the positioning of your product(s)
  • We build to this as quickly as seems to be a natural fit: some happen quickly, but more often than not it takes till  about the fith month for us all to have such a meeting of the minds

Stage5: Mentoring
(concurrent with all Stages)

  • where I have understood the issues well enough that I can advise on and condition the behaviours of the key people to better perform their direction and management
  • mentoring is a continuous process that lasts throughout our work together
